How to Apply for Voter ID Card Online in India?

Voter ID card is one of the important card for Indian citizens. This card is used on many of yours financial transactions like bank account opening, property registration, getting ration card etc. Most importantly, it allows you to caste you precious vote at the time of elections.

While many people have already their election id / voter id card in India, many don’t have; especially those attaining 18+ age now.

In this article, we’ll show how you can apply for voter id online (with screen shots).

Step 1

Collect the documents required:

  • Address Proof (Ration card, Passport, Aadhaar card, Driving license  etc.
  • Date of Birth Proof (Passport, 10th class marksheet
  • Passport size photograph

Scan all these documents and store them in your computer.

Proof of date of birth to be attached are as under:
(i) Birth certificate issued by a Municipal Authorities or district office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths or Baptism certificate; or
(ii) Birth certificate from the school (Govt. / Recognised) last attended by the applicant or any other recognised educational institution; or
(iii) Illiterate or semi-illiterate applicant who is not in possession of any of the above document are required to attach a declaration in prescribed format by either of the parents already included in the electoral roll in support of the applicants age. The format will be supplied on demand.

N.B. In the case of applicants born on or after 26.01.1989, only birth certificate issued by the Municipal Authorities or district office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths is acceptable

Proof of ordinary residence to be attached are as under:

(i) Bank / Kisan / Post Office current Pass Book, or
(ii) Applicants Ration Card / Passport / Driving License / Income Tax Assessment Order, or
(iii) Latest Water / Telephone / Electricity / Gas Connection Bill for that address, either in the name of the applicant or that of his / her immediate relation like parents etc., or
iv) Postal department’s posts received / delivered in the applicant’s name at the given address.

NOTE: If any applicant submits only ration card as proof of address, it should be accompanied by one more proof of address out of the above categories.


Step 2

Visit the official website of Election Commission of India at http://eci.nic.in/eci/eci.html

The screen will be something like this.

Click on “Enroll Now Become a Voter” image link as shown in above image.

Step 3

The next screen is something like this:

Select your state, enter your mobile no. and email id and click on “Proceed” button.

In just few seconds, you’ll receive a verification code on your mobile phone.

Enter that code on the screen and click on Proceed button.

Once code is confirmed by the system, you’ll be redirected to next screen.

Step 4:

Choose “Application for Inclusion of Name in Electoral Roll (Form 6)”.

The form is easy to fill-up and self-explanatory. Fill up all your details and click on Save.

Now, you’ll be redirected to Form 6 – which is the main form.

Step 5

Fill-up this form carefully, upload your photo and finally click on Submit button.

That’s it.

Just keep all your document ready. The concerned person (BLO of your area) will collect all the required documents from your home.
